Platelet-Rich
Fibrin (PRF) Treatment

When a person sustains a cut or wound, platelets arrive to stop the bleeding and promote healing. The platelets in our blood are integral to healing injuries on the body, so medical practitioners often choose to infuse “platelet-rich” blood near injury sites to speed the body's natural healing processes.

Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) Treatment for hair loss takes advantage of these natural healing processes to revitalize your scalp to grow new hair follicles. Blood is drawn from a vein in the arm, then placed in a centrifuge and spun to separate its components. Platelets are extracted using a syringe, and then, using a small needle, the platelets are placed into the targeted area.

PRF is similar to traditional platelet-rich plasma (PRP), as they both have a high concentration of growth factors which can stimulate hair growth. However, PRF is preferred as it enhances traditional PRP by converting it to a matrix, allowing platelets to remain active for up to seven days after injection, compared to just hours with PRP.

During the PRF therapy, topical numbing is applied to the scalp along with injectable numbing called a ring block before the procedure begins. The treatment takes between 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the extension of the area being treated. Dr. Jain typically recommends PRF with or without microneedling depending on the type of hair loss.
